Abstract

The number of automobiles in Padang city tends to increase above 10 percent annually loading more traffic to the road system, including major roads in the Padang CBD. This trend causes mostly all roads in the CBD steadily reaching its capacity. The on-street parking demand increases due to economic and population growth worsening the CBD road capacity. Therefore, the road space usage for on-street parking must be optimized in meeting the parking demand and hence the road capacity to serve the traffic can be maintained at an acceptable Level of Services (LoS). A case study involving a congested road section crossing Padang CBD was undertaken and the current practice was assessed so that proper parking controls could be proposed as countermeasures in improving the existing LoS. The findings from this study are expected could help the local road authority to improve the traffic flow in Padang CBD.
